Bryophyta, vulgo musci, sunt phylum plantarum.


Cryptogamia sunt: flores absunt, et per sporas propagant. Vasculosa non sunt (lignina non habent), neque radices adsunt. In plerisque speciebus aqua nutrimentaque extra caulem vehuntur, seu a foliis ex aere adsumuntur. Nonnullae autem texturas in caule phloemae xylemaeque similes habent.


In variis locis habitant: in solo, in saxis vel in ligno mortuo, seu tamquam epiphyta in arboribus. Cum gregatim vivunt, quasi pulvina vel, si in substrato repent, teges, videntur.


Generationes biformes alternantur. Haploideum gametophytum praevalet. Ex caulibus et foliis constat, et cum rhizoidis substrato affixum est. In antheridia et archegonia gametas producit, ex quarum copulatione diploideum sporophytum gignitur. Hoc ex seta et sporangio constat, et gametophyto connectitur, ex quo nutrimenta recipit. In sporangio sporas producit, ex quibus denuo gametophytum oritur.
