Petroglyphum (ex Graeco petros 'lapis' + glyphein 'caelare, scalpere, sculpere'; verbo primum facto Francogallice pétroglyphe) sive scalptura lapidaria[1] (-ae, f)[1] est imago a superficie lapidis abradendo, incidendo, scalpendo, terendo, vellicandove facta. Eruditi praeter Americam Septentrionalem, ut tales imagines dicant, plerumque verba pro caelatura, scalptura, sculptura, vel alias descriptiones modi, adhibent. Petroglypha toto orbe terrarum inveniuntur, saepe cum hominibus praehistoricis consociatae.


Non omnes petroglypha sunt pictographae, imagines super lapidem descriptae vel pictae. Ambo imaginis genera sunt exempla latioris categoriae, artis lapideae. Petromorpha, exemplaria formaeque a multis et magnis saxis humi ab hominibus factis, etiam sunt distinctae. Inukshuk quoque sunt unica, solum in regionibus arcticis inventa, reproductionibus imitationibusque? in regionibus australioribus confectis exceptis.

Historia |


Antiquissimae petroglypha facta sunt circa terminum aetatum Palaeolithicae posterioris et Neolithicae, abhinc annos circa 10 000 ad 12 000, vel fortasse noviore (Kamyana Mohyla). Abhinc annos circa 7000 ad 9000, alii systematum scribendi praecursores, sicut pictographa et ideogrammata, fieri coeperunt. Petroglypha autem longe lateque diffusa sunt, et aliae culturae diutius continuaverunt eos adhibendo, etiam donec contactum cum cultura Occidentali incidit, saeculo vicensimo. Petroglypha inveniuntur omnino in orbe terrarum praeter Antarcticam, praecipue in Africa, Australia, Scandinavia, Siberia, et America Septentrionali inter occasum solis et meridiem spectante.



Interpretatio |




Compositae petroglypha in Scandinavia (Häljesta, Västmanland Sueciae), imago ex tempore Aetatis Aeneae Nordicae. Hae glypha ut in photographo sint clariores pinguntur.




Petroglyphum ordinis Ovium canadensium prope Moab Utae: imago communis in vastitate regionis Civitatum Foederatarum Americae inter occasum solis et meridiem spectans.

Explicationes controversae docentur a Psychologia Iungiana et iudiciis Mirceae Eliade. Secundum has theorias, similitudo inter petroglypha (et alia symbola atavistica vel archetypica) culturarum continentiumque distinctorum genetica sit hereditas structurae cerebri humani.
