Europa est satelles planetae Iovis, minima Mediceorum Siderum, Ioviorum satellitum quattuor inventorum a Galilaeo Galilaei et quod attinet ad magnitudinem sextus satelles a maximo in Systemate Solari. Nomen obtinet ab Europa, amata Iovis, qui eam in forma tauri vestitus abduxit.


Nomen "Europae" cum paulo post lunam inventam proposuisset Simon Marius, diu (cum nominibus lunarum aliarum Galilaeanarum) non in pretio erat, neque in usu frequenti erat usque ad saeculum medium vicesimum. In litteris astronomicis interea saepius nomine Jupiter II, id est "satelles Iovis altera", designatur.


Multi astronomi putant sub planetae superficie glaciei oceanum aquae esse.
