Carl Friedrich Gauss natus est die 30 Aprilis 1777 Brunsvici in Ducatu Brunsvici-Wolfenbüttel, nunc parte Saxoniae Inferioris Germaniae, filius parentium pauperum classis laborantium.[3]Mater quidem legere et scribere non potuit, et diem eius ortus numquam in tabulas rettulit.


Gauss puer portentosus erat, et iam adolescens ingenium suum proferebat; e.g., cum magister discipulis imperavit summam facere omnium numerorum ab uno usque ad centum, puer statim respondit 5050 (et magistrum, qui sibi pausam speravisset, frustravit). Nam Gauss intellexit 100 plus 1 101 facere, 99 + 2 item, 98 + 3 item, et cetera, ita sequuntur usque ad 50 plus 51 = 101. Ergo quingagies 101 summa rogata esse debet quae 5050 est.


Dixit Gauss "Mathematica regina scientiarum est et theoria numerorum regina mathematicae est."[4]


Suum maximum opus erat Disquisitiones Arithmeticae, anno 1801 editum.
