Agnomen "Villae Poppaeae" ab hodiernis datur (Italiane Villa (di) Poppea) quia variae res ibi repertae praedium Poppaeae uxoris alterius Neronis fuisse arguunt. Aedificium ab ignibus Vesuvii montis anno 79 oblitum est. Archaeologi in Villa Poppaea picturas murales Romanas reppererunt.
