Archaeologi prope Westick in urbano Camenae agro quendam vicum invenerunt qui a neolithico ad tempora Carolingiana habitatus erat. Haud procul a Camena, in locis hodie Oberaden et Beckinghausen dictis, Romani castra militaria ab anno 11 ad annum 8 a.E.V. habebant.

Prima mentio Camenae in litteris erat in urbario monasterii Werdinensis circiter annum 1050. Iura urbana saeculo tredecimo accepit. Extractionis carbonis causa celeriter saeculo undevicesimo crescebat.
