In Graecia antiqua peltastae (Graece πελτασταί, peltastai) fuerunt genus militum expeditorum ad insidias plerumque instruendas vel ad hoplitas adiuvandos.

Instructi erant peltastae iaculis nonnullis nec numquam brevibus gladiis; galeis ornabantur coriaceis, neque saepe metallicis cassidibus.
Corpora protegebant sua parvis scutis et levibus, quibus nomen pelta (Graece: πέλτη) erat; peltae traduntur ligneae fuisse vel vimineae ac pellibus indutae ovillis.


Strategi fere Graeci hoplitis uti armatissimis malebant quam expeditis militibus – ut sagittariis (toxotai) et funditoribus – mercede praesertim conductis. Ob levem belli apparatum nequibant peltastae vim sustinere hostium, quos ab latere adoriebantur vel post tergum.


Anno 390 a.C.n., bello Corinthio, Iphicrates Atheniensis imperator pugnam Lacedaemoniae conseruit phalangi tantum in aciem producendo peltastas: una quasi omnino mora[1] in nihilum redacta est.
Perperam etiam hoplitae Iphicratenses antiquitus vocati peltastae sunt, ut ipsi Diodorus Siculus et Cornelius Nepos erraverunt: nam peltam vere ferebant, sed non expediti mercede conducti erant.


Philippus II Macedonicus et Alexander filius maxime bello peltastas adhibuerunt ad latera aciei una cum equitibus et comitatibus (Graece: hetairoi) defendenda, nec minus ad pervenientes iaculis interficiendos hostes.
