Commentarium in New York Times, 11 Martii 1907

Duncan MacDougall (1866–1920) fuit medicus apud Haverhill in Massachusetta, qui conatus est animae gravitatem tempore mortis humanae expendere. Etiam poemata in variis magazinis divulgavit.[1] Cancri hepatarii[2] obiit circa diem 16 Octobris 1920.[1]

Anno 1907, MacDougall, a nonnullis aliis medicis adiutus, sex aegros morientes expendit. Adeo credidit hanc investigationem docuisse animae esse massam, quam cum anima ipsa corpus puncto mortis relinquit. Praeterea, MacDougall quindecim canes morientes expendit; quo facto, is observavit eorum massam corpoream non mutavisse. Quia (ut crediderunt et credunt plurimi) canibus non sunt animae, MacDougall putavit hanc investigationem monstravisse animae humanae esse pondus!

Mense Martio 1907, suae investigationes editae sunt in The New York Times et in American Medicine, medicorum actis diurnis. Quamquam hae investigationes probabiliter habent parvam significationem et nullum meritum scientificum, MacDougall dictum—animam humanam viginti unius grammi ponderis esse—inter populos factum est mema, reperta in nomine pelliculae 21 Grams. Hae autem investigationes putantur errori obnoxiae quoniam modus experimenti fuit inconcinnior, et numerus exemplorum paucior. Homines scientiae periti has investigationes praetereunt.
