Europa in tauro, id est Iove, sedens. Fictile signum Athenis inventum. Ca 480 - 460 a.C.n.


In mythologia Graeca Europa (Graece Εὐρώπη) erat filia Agenoris, Phoenicum regis, et Telephassae (vel secundum alios Argiopes). Soror autem Cadmi, Thebarum conditoris, fuit. E Iove tres filios genuit, Minoenque Rhadamanthumque Sarpedonnemque.


Cum inter virgines comites in Phoenico litore luderet Europa, Zeus/Iuppiter eam conspexit ac statim pulchritudine formae exarsit. Tum, ne a Iunone/Hera uxore vel a quoquam alio agnosceretur, in tauri albi speciem auratis cornibus sese transfiguravit et gregi regio sese immiscuit : sic ad virgines accessit. Europa primo timida, mox forma et blanditiis tauri placata, ita confidens facta est ut, cornibus adprehensis, in tergum consederit. Praeda potitus Iuppiter eam trans mare in Cretam portavit, ubi Europam stupravit. Ex quo concubitu tres clarissimi filii nati sunt.Cur ab ea una ex quinque partibus orbis nominata sit, non liquet.


Post raptum Europae, iussu patris quattuor fratres eam per orbem frustra quaesiverunt et nova regna condiderunt : Cadmus, qui Thebas condidit, Cilix, qui nomen suum Ciliciae dedit, Phoenix, a quo Punici et Phoenices dicti, Phineus, qui rex in Thracia factus est.
