Ipomedon est fabula romanica Anglonormannice ab Hugone de Rotelande ante annum fere 1190 scripta. Alia fabula Hugonis, titulo Protheselaus, patrono Gilberto Baderon filio, domino Monemutae, dicata est, qui anno 1191 seu paulo antea mortuus est.


Eo tempore quo fabulam suam composuit auctor, qui ter se nomine pleno Hue de Rotelande nuncupat (v. 33 etc.)[1] in vico Credenhill Herefordiensis comitatus habitabat: A Credehulle a ma meisun (v. 10571). Res nonnullae huius temporis in textu referuntur, inter quas obsidio Rotomagi a rege Ludovico VII anno 1174 conducta (vv. 5351-5352); rex Cambricus "Ris", scilicet Rhys ap Gruffydd (v. 8942). Nomen scriptoris Gualteri Map, fortasse Hugonis amici, in textu reperitur: Sul ne sai pas de mentir l'art Walter Map reset ben sa part: "Ego non solus mentire scio: Gualterus Map partem suam taliter scit" (vv. 7185-7186).[2] Nomen cuiusdam "Huge de Hungrie", mulierum seductoris, Hugone Herefordiae canonico attribuitur, qui et ille socius fuerit auctoris sive aemulus.


Nomina personarum huius fabulae praecipue e poësi anteriori Roman de Thebes ("Fabula Thebarum") retracta esse censentur, quae anno circiter 1150 in aula Henrici II et Alienorae ab auctore quodam Pictaviensi composita erit. Historia autem neque ex hac, neque e fabulis Christiani de Trecis (sicut Kölbing crediderat),[3] neque aliunde derivatur, sed fere e novo ab Hue de Rotelande confecta est. Protagonista Ipomedon eques, amore principissae captus, apud eam officium pincernae, nomine suo celato, suscepit; ad virtutem suam monstrandam res admirabiles in terris longinquis perficere vult; mox reditus in certamina tridua, nomine etiamnunc celato, praecellit; sub simulatione dementis pricipissam contra monstra tria defendit; se tandem revelat eamque in matrimonium ducit.[4] Haec res interdum stylo parodico et iocoso enarratur, interdum libidinoso:

Versio ad linguam Francogallicam antiquam leviter accommodatam saeculo XIII medio ab anonymo confecta est e qua fragmentum unum servatur.[6] Versiones variae in lingua Anglica media confectae sunt.[7] Versio in oratione soluta, titulo The Life of Ipomydon, a Roberto Copland saeculo XV exeunte confecta, a Wynkyn de Worde impressa est.
