Aetate latinatis aurea dicta (sc. tempora posteriora rei publicae Romanae atque exordii principatus) commune inter syllabas breves distinguebatur. Sua cuique vocali quantitas fuit, quibus uno verbo variae signifiactiones fieri potuerunt. Exempli gratia:


  • līber – liber

  • lēvis – levis

  • mālum – malum


  • ōs – os

  • lūtum – lutum


Descriptio collapsus |


Mutatio appellationis harum vocalium in sermone vulgaris verisimiliter orta est ex commutato modo accinendi: Nunc enim in consuetudinem venit syllabas accentuatas generatim longe sonare, reliquas autem brevius. Quare effectum est quod syllabae breves atque longae paulatim adaequatae sunt.
