Cursus menstruus.


Menstrua[1] sive menses[2] sunt sanguinis profusiones ex fecundarum mulierum ac aliarum feminarum primatum utero singulis mensibus profluentes, cum endometrium cursu menstruo sine graviditate perfecto suo loco expellitur. Primi menses menarcha, ultimi autem menopausa dicuntur.


Singulis mensibus unum aut alterum ovarium ovum producit, atque in utero augetur endometrium, ut ovum recipiat. Si ovum non fecundatum erit, endometrium ex utero emittetur per plures dies (saepius inter duos et octo).[3] Totum cursum oestrogeno et progesterono hormontibus ordinatur.

Apud antiquos menstruae purgationes menstrua aut menses appellabantur. In recentiore autem Latinitate aliae quoque appellationes in usum venerunt, sicut
menstruum,[4][5][6]menstruatio,[4][5][7]fluxus menstrualis,[7]purgatio,[6]epimenium,[6]catamenium,[8]emmenon,[8]catharsis.[6]
