Civitas nomine Alexandri Magni nuncupata, qui illam condidit, magis magisque crevit, cum portus esset Aegypti ad triticum in Italiam ferendum. Forma urbis antiquae a principio ab Alexandro ipso ordinata est. Nota ob turrem vel Pharum in insula ante Alexandriam sita cui nomen est Φάρος (et fuit unum e septem miraculis mundi) atque ob bibliothecam omnem sapientiam mundi continentem, urbs Alexandria floruit sub Graecis Ptolemaeis et postea sub Romanis. De pharo Gaius Iulius Caesar scripsit: "Pharus est in insula turris, magna altitudine, mirificis operibus exstructa, quae nomen ab insula accepit".[2] Aevo Christiano Alexandria metropolis fuit theologiae et episcopatus magni Athanasii.
