Vita Augusti est opus biographicum Graece (Βίος Καίσαρος[1]) a Nicolao Damasceno, imperatoris coaevo, scriptum. Huius operis sex fragmenta tantum ad tempora nostra pervenerunt; eventa in illis relata non ultra mensem novembrem anni 44 a.C.n. procedunt : itaque ad Augusti educationem iuventutemque et ad Caesaris successionem pertinent. Praeterea laudatio potius quam historia critica videri potest : sive enim circa 20 a.C.n.[2] sive ut nonnulli volunt circa 8 a.C.n. librum suum perfecit Nicolaus, qui Herodis Magni minister et legatus erat, certe Augusti benevolentiam adsentatione captare cupiebat. Saepe biographiam quam de se ipso composuerat Augustus in linguam Graecam convertisse creditur[3] (quae hodie deperdita est). Sunt tamen etiam qui publicationem post Augusti mortem (14 p.C.) differant[4].

Haec sex fragmenta, quibus Felix Jacoby numeros 125-130 in operibus Nicolai tribuit, e duobus libris manuscriptis ducta sunt :



  • Turonensi C 980, undecimi saeculi, qui Excerpta de Virtutibus et Vitiis continet (pars erat encyclopediae historicae iussu Constantini Porphyrogeniti decimo saeculo compilatae). Hic liber in insula Cypro a Nicolao Perescio emptus (1627) primo Parisiis ab Henrico Valesio anno 1634 editus est = fragmenta 125-129 quae ad educationem Octavii pertinent.


  • Scorialensi Ω I 11, sexti decimi saeculi, qui aliam partem eiusdem compilationis Excerpta de Insidiis inscriptam et fragmentum 130 Nicolai continet. Hic liber non ante annum 1843 inventus et editus est. Fragmentum hoc longissimam narrationem Caesaris idibus Martiis caesi et rerum sequentibus mensibus gestarum praebet. Hic fons Nicolai non erat ipse Augustus, fortasse potius Asinius Pollio[5].
